Why Go to the Writing Center?

Posted by

The Writing Center is open again – hooray! And as our reservation system on the WCOnline fills up this week, one name we might not yet see among our appointment is yours.

Why should I go to the Writing Center you might be asking yourself.

Maybe you’re thinking you’re too shy, scared, embarrassed (or other fill in the blanks) to make or appointment.

Or, maybe it’s the opposite.

Maybe you decided long ago that your papers are good enough to let you slide through college so you’ll never have to worry about writing again.  Maybe you’re thinking that you should actually be applying to work at the Writing Center (you can check a different part of our website – we’re hiring!).  Maybe you’re just thinking you just don’t have enough time in your schedule to squeeze in that extra 30 minutes today.

For all of those reasons – and all the ones I didn’t mention – let’s think about how useful a Writing Center can be. Back in February, we unveiled our poster – The Writing Process – that highlights the ways we can help all writers at any stage.  Take a look:

Come see the poster in our lobby!

Maybe you didn’t realize all the ways we can help.  And, maybe, you didn’t realize how much can actually be considered as you explore the writing process.

So, if you aren’t convinced yet, it’s time to bring in the professional opinions. A casual stroll through quotations on the reading / book recommendation website Goodreads reveals how passionately writers feel about the necessity of taking another look / editing their work:

“Kill your darlings, kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler’s heart, kill your darlings.”
― Stephen KingOn Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

“Put down everything that comes into your head and then you’re a writer. But an author is one who can judge his own stuff’s worth, without pity, and destroy most of it.” (Casual Chance, 1964)”
― Colette

“Writing without revising is the literary equivalent of waltzing gaily out of the house in your underwear.”
― Patricia Fuller

“Be a good editor. The Universe needs more good editors, God knows.”
― Kurt Vonnegut Jr.Letters

By now, you hopefully agree that there’s no reason to stop revising your work before an assignment is due.  And, by now, you hopefully agree that everyone can benefit from a little extra help.

So, why not you? And did we mention our appointments are free?
